Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has taken significant steps to bolster medical education and training in the state.

Two new medical colleges, Government Medical College & Hospital in Phulbani of Kandhamal district, and Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital in Talcher of Angul district, have become functional in 2025. This brings the total number of government medical colleges in Odisha to 14.

To enhance the quality of medical education, the government has appointed 91 Assistant Professors in 23 broad speciality disciplines and 7 Assistant Professors in 6 super speciality disciplines across various medical colleges in the state.

These appointments include specialists and super-specialists in prominent institutions like SCB Medical College in Cuttack, MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Bhubaneswar.

In addition to these new appointments, 38 posts of Professor and 27 posts of Associate Professor have been filled through departmental promotion. The Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC) in Cuttack has also benefited from new appointments, with 10 super-specialist Assistant Professors joining the institution.

These developments are expected to improve medical education and clinical services in the state, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes for the people of Odisha. The government aims to continue strengthening its medical infrastructure by appointing more specialists and super-specialists in government medical colleges and hospitals.
