Odisha’s Debt Burden Touches Rs 9.31 Lakh Crore From FY 2022-23 To August 2025

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s total debt burden has reached Rs 9,31,198.57 crore from the financial year 2022–23 up to August 2025–26, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the State Assembly on Monday.

In a written reply to a question by Baliguda (ST) MLA Chakramani Kanhar, the Chief Minister provided year-wise figures of the state’s outstanding debt:

  • Rs 88,164.82 crore in 2022–23
  • Rs 96,310.40 crore in 2023–24
  • Rs 1,20,710.18 crore in 2024–25
  • Rs 1,26,013.17 crore till August 2025–26

CM Majhi clarified that the state government has availed loans to fund various development-oriented programs.

“These borrowings are aligned with structured initiatives, ensuring long-term, qualitative impact on Odisha’s economy and the welfare of its people,” he stated.

The government also placed details of loan repayments and interest payments for the same period before the House.

Regarding central assistance, the Chief Minister said Odisha received Rs 20,984.50 crore in 2023–24 and Rs 17,956.35 crore in 2024–25 under various Central schemes.
