Bhubaneswar: The sixth day of the Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Wednesday, as Congress legislators staged protests during the Question Hour, disrupting proceedings and prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House till 11.30 am.
As the House assembled at 10.30 am, Congress MLAs stormed into the Well, raising slogans and waving placards demanding justice and enhanced safety for women and students. Slogans such as “Nari Surakhya Aamara Dabi” and “Chatri Surakhya Aamara Dabi” were prominently displayed.
The opposition alleged a spurt in crimes against women, including cases of rape, molestation, and self-immolation, during the 15-month tenure of the BJP-led government in the state.
Speaker Surama Padhy made repeated appeals to the protesting members to return to their seats and allow the House to function. However, with the commotion showing no signs of abating, she adjourned proceedings till 11.30 am.
As a result, the first half of the day’s session lasted barely 30 minutes.
