Bhubaneswar: The Superintending Engineer of Upper Kolab Head Works Division in Kolabnagar has issued an alert to the District Collectors of Koraput, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, and Dantewada, warning of a potential water release from the Upper Kolab Reservoir. With the reservoir’s water level reaching 856.84 meters, authorities are considering opening the spillway gates to prevent overflow and ensure dam safety.
District collectors have been instructed to take necessary precautions to safeguard downstream communities. This development comes as the reservoir’s water level continues to rise, prompting authorities to act swiftly. The decision to release water is aimed at mitigating potential risks and preventing flooding in low-lying areas.
“In inviting a kind reference to the subject cited above, it is to inform that theUpper Kolab Reservoir has reached at R.L.856.84m at 7.00 PM on dtd 02.10.2025, having a live storge capacity of 88.25%. Also, due to incessant rainfall in the catchment area, thereservoir level of the Upper Kolab Reservoir is in rising trend. In this connection, it is to bring your kind notice that, the full reservoir Level of Upper Kolab Reservoir is 858.00 m corresponding that the same may reach shortly, if the present intensity of rainfall continues in the Catchment Area. So, it is proposed to release the water from the reservoir through spillwaygates of Upper Kolab Dam as a precautionary measure at any moment”, read the notification issued by the Superintending Engineer of Upper Kolab Head Works Division.
