Dhenkanal: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday paid homage to the young martyr Baji Rout, who sacrificed his life at the tender age of 12 during India’s freedom struggle. The Chief Minister announced new development initiatives in Baji Rout’s name, including the naming of a road in Bhubaneswar and the launch of a welfare scheme aimed at preserving the legacy of the brave freedom fighter.

The tribute took place during the centenary celebration of Baji Rout’s birth at his birthplace, Nilakanthapur village under Bhuban block in Dhenkanal district. CM Majhi laid a wreath at Baji Rout’s memorial and inaugurated a sand art and photo exhibition dedicated to the martyr’s memory.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister described Baji Rout as India’s youngest freedom fighter, whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations. “Though his life was short, his legacy is everlasting. His bravery embodies the spirit of the Odia nation, and today’s youth must draw inspiration from his ideals and commitment,” he said.

The Chief Minister urged the youth to emulate Baji Rout’s ideals, discipline, and commitment to duty. He further stressed the importance of preserving Odia identity and following the martyr’s example to foster development in the state and nation.

In line with preserving the heritage of Odisha’s great sons, the government has decided to observe the birth and martyrdom anniversaries of prominent personalities in their birthplaces rather than Bhubaneswar. Baji Rout’s village has been declared a “Model Hero Village,” and developmental initiatives are underway.

In a landmark development, the foundation stone was laid for the Baji Rout Sports Complex in Dhenkanal, with a budget allocation of Rs 120 crores. This complex aims to promote sports and provide a platform for youth talent to thrive, contributing significantly to sports infrastructure and youth empowerment in the district.

The Chief Minister also outlined the government’s vision for Odisha’s future. “By 2036, the centenary of Odisha’s statehood, every district will be prosperous, laying the foundation for a prosperous Odisha,” he stated.

Dhenkanal is set to witness industrial growth with projects worth over Rs 50,000 crores underway, including Rs 30,000 crores invested in solar energy. These initiatives are expected to create approximately 26,400 employment opportunities, helping to prevent migration by enabling youth to work within their communities.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Majhi said, “India is witnessing unprecedented growth across social, political, and economic sectors. Odisha will play a vital role in India’s journey to becoming a developed nation by 2047.”

On the occasion, descendants of Baji Rout and families of other freedom fighters involved in the Praja Mandal movement were felicitated. The Chief Minister unveiled the book Dhenkanal Ganasaṅgrāmara Amara Shaheed Baji Rout, published by the Sahitya Akademi, along with a portrait of the martyr, which will be distributed to schools across the district.

Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra recalled the martyr’s courage, affirming that Baji Rout’s story will remain a timeless source of inspiration.

Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj also paid tribute and remarked that the bravery of a 12-year-old boy has brought immense pride to the Odia people. He said the Praja Mandal movement of Dhenkanal represents a saga of great courage. Odisha had the highest number of freedom fighters and made significant contributions to India’s independence movement.

The event was also graced by Dhenkanal MP Rudra Narayan Pany, MLAs Bibhuti Bhusan Pradhan (Parjang), Satrughan Jena (Kamakhyanagar), and Simarani Nayak (Hindol) paid homage to the martyr.

Dr. Bijay Ketan Upadhyaya, Secretary and Director of the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, delivered the opening remarks and Dhenkanal Collector Ashish Ishwar Patil offered the vote of thanks.
