Bhubaneswar: In a significant breakthrough, police on Thursday arrested four members of the notorious Chinku Tarei gang near the Mahanadi River under Krushnanandapur police station in Jagatsinghpur district.
Acting on a tip-off, the Krushnanandapur police team arrested four gang members at the crime spot, while one suspect managed to escape into the nearby jungle.
The arrested persons have been identified as Chinmaya Tarei alias Chinku, involved in 33 cases; Sk Rahimuddin alias Sk Karim, linked to 5 cases; Radheshyam Das alias Bhaba, involved in 2 cases; and Subrat Das, a resident of Boro in Kendrapara district.
During the operation, police recovered one gold necklace, three sharp swords, an iron rod, a Yamaha FZ bike, two mobile phones, two packets of chili powder, four handkerchiefs, and beer bottles from the accused.
“These four arrested members belong to the hardcore Chinku Tarei gang, which has a total of seven members. Chinku, the gang leader, was previously incarcerated for nine months but resumed criminal activities upon release. The gang is notorious for threatening victims with weapons, snatching gold chains, looting mobile phones and cash. They were reportedly planning another dacoity last night, but the police action thwarted their plans,” said Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police Ankit Kumar Verma while addressing the media.
Police continue to search for the remaining gang member who remains at large.
