Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government over the gang rape of an Odia medical student in Durgapur. BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar condemned the incident, stating that West Bengal has become a “nightmare for women’s safety” under the current administration.
In a post on X, Majumdar highlighted the alleged failure of the state government to ensure women’s safety, saying that the administration’s “deliberate policy of appeasement” has emboldened violent criminals. “Mamata Banerjee has turned West Bengal into a safe haven for rapists and criminals,” he alleged.
The incident involves a second-year medical student from Jaleswar in Balasore district, who was allegedly abducted and gang-raped in a nearby forest while outside her college campus in Durgapur. The victim has been receiving treatment, and her statement has been recorded by the police. A forensic team has been sent to the crime scene to collect evidence.
The West Bengal government has initiated an investigation, with the police assuring a thorough probe. However, the BJP has demanded swift action and accountability from the Mamata Banerjee government.
