Puri: A tourist from West Bengal narrowly escaped drowning after being swept away by a rip current at Puri sea beach on Tuesday. The incident occurred at Sector 7 of the beach, a spot where such mishaps have been reported earlier.
According to reports, the tourist, identified as Debash Acharya, was pulled into deep waters by a strong rip current. Lifeguards stationed nearby noticed the incident and immediately jumped into action. They managed to rescue Debash and provided first aid on the spot. Sources said his condition is stable.
This is not an isolated incident. Similar cases of tourists being caught in rip currents have been reported from different stretches of the Puri coastline in recent months.
Experts and local authorities attribute these recurring mishaps to low awareness among visitors, insufficient deployment of lifeguards during peak hours, lack of modern rescue equipment, and instances of tourists entering the sea under the influence of alcohol or intoxicants.
