Bhubaneswar: The cyber wing of the State Crime Branch has arrested the third accused from West Bengal in connection with an online gaming fraud involving over Rs 1.08 crore.
The accused has been identified as Sugata Majumder (29), a resident of Sukantapally village under Gangnapur police limits in Nadia district of West Bengal. Majumder, a B.Sc. Zoology graduate, works as a freelance video editor.
According to an official press release, a citizen had lodged a complaint alleging that he was defrauded by cybercriminals through an online gaming platform. The fraudsters lured him into trading on an illegal gaming site, convincing him to invest progressively larger amounts.
The victim eventually transferred a total of Rs 1,08,79,420 (Rupees One Crore Eight Lakh Seventy-Nine Thousand Four Hundred Twenty only). When he tried to withdraw his money, the fraudsters demanded additional payment and refused to release his funds. Realizing he had been duped, the complainant filed an FIR with the cyber police.
Following investigation and analysis of transaction details and digital evidence, a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Diptimayee Mallick conducted a raid in Nadia district and apprehended the accused. During the operation, police seized several incriminating materials including mobile phones, SIM cards, and hard disks from his possession.
Majumder was produced before the OPID Court in Cuttack under Sections 318(2)/318(4)/336(2)/338/61(2)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act, 2000, Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978, and Section 6 of the OPID (in Financial Establishment) Act, 2011.
Police said that two other accused had already been arrested earlier in connection with the same case, while further investigation is underway to trace other individuals involved in the fraud.
