Red Alert In Odisha Districts As Cyclone Montha Nears Andhra Coast

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a comprehensive midday weather bulletin today from its Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, sounding an alarm over the Severe Cyclonic Storm “Montha” (pronounced Mon-Tha) poised to strike the Andhra Pradesh coast, with significant repercussions expected across Odisha.

As of 0830 hrs IST, the cyclone, centered near latitude 14.9°N and longitude 82.9°E, is approximately 160 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 240 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 320 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 530 km south-southwest of Gopalpur. Moving north-northwestwards at 12 kmph, it is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, this evening or night, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

The cyclone has already unleashed severe conditions, including a squall with winds reaching 60 kmph that swept through Gopalpur at 0240 hrs IST, lasting two minutes. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers have been widespread across Odisha, with heavy to very heavy rainfall reported in Ganjam and Gajapati districts. Significant rainfall measurements include 12 cm in Patrapur (Ganjam), 11 cm in Gosani (Gajapati), and 9 cm in Sankheimundi, Paralakhemundi, R.udaigiri, and Kukudahandi (all in Ganjam and Gajapati). Other notable amounts include 7 cm in Berhampur and 4 cm in multiple districts such as Pottangi (Koraput) and Bangiriposi (Mayurbhanj).

Temperature fluctuations have been notable, with a marked fall of about 5°C in South Odisha and an appreciable fall of 2-3°C in parts of the state. The highest maximum temperature of 35.2°C was recorded at Paradip, while the lowest minimum of 19.0°C was observed at Phulbani and Angul. Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal by 4°C in North Coastal Odisha and 2-3°C in many Coastal Odisha districts, while minimum temperatures were markedly above normal by 5-7°C in Interior Odisha.

Detailed Forecast and Warnings

The IMD has provided a day-by-day forecast and issued color-coded warnings for Odisha through November 4, 2025:

Day 1 (Valid until 0830 hrs IST of October 29, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are very likely at most places across Odisha.

Red Warning (Take Action): Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls (>20 cm) is expected in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam. Surface wind speeds of 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph, are anticipated in Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, and Nawarangpur.

Orange Warning (Be Prepared to Take Action): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is likely in Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri, with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph in Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Bolangir, and Nuapada.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware): Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) and winds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are expected in Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, and Bargarh.

Day 2 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of October 29 to 0830 hrs IST of October 30, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at most places.

Red Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, and Rayagada, with winds of 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph in Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput.

Orange Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall in Nuapada, Bolangir, Kandhamal, and Gajapati, with winds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph in Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nawarangpur, Nuapada, and Bolangir.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall and winds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph in Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Boudh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Bargarh.

Day 3 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of October 30 to 0830 hrs IST of October 31, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at many places.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Day 4 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of October 31 to 0830 hrs IST of November 1, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at a few places in North Odisha and one or two places in South Odisha.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Day 5 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of November 1 to 0830 hrs IST of November 2, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at one or two places.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh.

Day 6 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of November 2 to 0830 hrs IST of November 3, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at one or two places.

Warning: Nil.

Day 7 (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of November 3 to 0830 hrs IST of November 4, 2025):

Forecast: Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri, with dry weather likely elsewhere.

Warning: Nil.

Outlook for Subsequent 3 Days (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of November 4 to 0830 hrs IST of November 7, 2025): No large change.

Sea and Fishermen Warnings:

The southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal are experiencing gale winds of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, with high to very high sea conditions prevailing until the night of October 28. The northwest Bay of Bengal will see squally winds increasing to 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from the evening of October 28 to the morning of October 29, with sea conditions worsening to very rough to high. Along and off Odisha coasts, squally weather with winds of 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is expected, escalating to 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from the evening of October 28 to early October 29, before gradually decreasing. Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into Odisha coasts until October 30 and southwest and central Bay of Bengal areas until October 29, with those at sea urged to return immediately.

The IMD has urged the public to download the MAUSAM, Meghdoot, and Damini apps for location-specific forecasts, agromet advisories, and lightning warnings, and follow updates on social media channels like @mcbbsr on Twitter and the MC Bhubaneswar Facebook page.
