Baripada: In a tragic incident, a Plus Two first-year student of Mahatma Gandhi Higher Secondary School, Baisinga, was found dead at his home in Kendua village under Baisinga police limits in Mayurbhanj district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Ganesh Gaana, elder son of Jayanta Gaana, a mason from Gandarda village who had been living in a rented house in Kendua with his family for the past 16 years.
According to sources, Ganesh was alone at home as his parents and younger brother had gone to Baripada for medical reasons. Around afternoon, he reportedly told his father over the phone that he was going to attend a computer class. A short while later, one of his friends called Jayanta to inform him that Ganesh had been found hanging inside the house.
Friends who went to check on him said they found the main door locked from inside. After entering through the back door, they discovered Ganesh hanging from the staircase railing. They immediately brought him down and rushed him to Baisinga Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Upon receiving the information, Baisinga police reached the spot, registered an unnatural death case, and began investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem, which will be conducted on Tuesday.
Family members have alleged that the student might have taken the extreme step due to a personal relationship issue. Police said they are verifying all angles, including call records, as part of the inquiry.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the locality, with friends and neighbours gathering at the hospital to mourn the student’s untimely death.
