Jajpur: A 12-year-old boy’s act of bravery prevented a major tragedy on Thursday when he risked his life to rescue two people from drowning in the Baitarani River at Garadeshwar under Jajpur Town police station limits.
According to reports, Preeti Prajna Mishra (12) had come to her maternal uncle’s house with her brother to celebrate the Kartik Purnima festival.
On Thursday morning, Preeti, her uncle, and his daughter went to bathe in the river when all three were swept away by the strong current.
Hearing their cries for help, Satyaprakash Sethi, a minor boy who was fishing nearby, immediately jumped into the river and managed to rescue two of them after a courageous struggle. However, Preeti drowned and has not yet been traced despite intensive search operations by the Jajpur Fire Brigade.
Local residents have hailed Satyaprakash as a hero, commending his quick thinking and courage in saving two lives at great personal risk. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the area even as people laud the boy’s extraordinary bravery.
