Angul: In a shocking incident, the body of a 52-year-old woman was found hanging from a mango tree in a forest near Mahalapasi village under Shikar Panchayat in Pallahara police limits on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Gurubari Nayak, wife of Dharanidhar Nayak. According to sources, locals spotted the body hanging about 50 metres from the main road and immediately alerted the police after identifying her.
Upon receiving the information, a team from Pallahara police station rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Gurubari’s son, Biren Nayak, reached the site after being informed of the incident and later lodged a murder complaint, alleging foul play in his mother’s death.
Police officials said the cause of death—whether it was suicide or homicide—can be confirmed only after the autopsy report is received.
Preliminary reports suggest that Gurubari had been living alone for many years. Her husband, Dharanidhar, had reportedly been living separately for nearly two decades with no contact with the family. To sustain herself, Gurubari worked as a domestic help in nearby households, villagers said.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are questioning locals to gather more details.
