New Delhi: Panic gripped the area near Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station Gate No. 1 on Monday evening after a car burst into flames, triggering a chain reaction that set three more vehicles ablaze.
According to preliminary reports, the explosion occurred around 6:56 PM, following which Delhi Fire Services received multiple distress calls reporting the incident.
Fire tenders and Delhi Police teams quickly reached the spot and began firefighting and rescue operations. The entire area has been cordoned off as authorities work to control the situation.
Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast followed by thick plumes of smoke rising from the parking area near the metro station. Several nearby cars were damaged in the blaze.
While there are unconfirmed reports of injuries, officials said the exact number of casualties, if any, is yet to be ascertained.
According to the Delhi Fire Services, the first call was received at 6:56 PM, and several subsequent calls reported multiple vehicles on fire near the Red Fort Metro Station. Seven fire tenders have been rushed to the spot.
The area where the explosion occurred is known to be heavily crowded, especially during evening hours due to its proximity to the Red Fort, a major tourist attraction, and the Chandni Chowk market.
Efforts are underway to determine the cause of the explosion.
