Bhubaneswar: The Government Railway Police (GRP) at Bhubaneswar Railway Station on Monday arrested a notorious mobile snatcher, Amit Kumar Barik, using advanced face-scan technology.
Barik, who had previously been involved in several snatching incidents in Bhubaneswar and neighboring districts, was spotted during a joint patrol conducted by the RPF and GRP near the station lift.
Inspector-in-Charge of Bhubaneswar GRP Police Station, Ashok Kumar Gochhayat, said, “During patrolling, we observed a man behaving suspiciously. We traced and interrogated him. Initially, he refused to admit his wrongdoing, but later disclosed his identity as Amit Barik.”
Gochhayat added, “We used a face scanner, which is a multi-biometric identification system, to gather more information. When a person’s photograph is captured, their previous criminal records and details are retrieved. The system confirmed his involvement in several cases.”
Following his arrest, the GRP recovered more than four stolen mobile phones from Barik.
Further investigations are underway to determine his involvement in additional snatching and theft cases across the city and neighboring districts.
