Balasore: In a shocking incident, three children from Shalabani village in Nilagiri block of Balasore district were hospitalised after consuming Thimet, a highly toxic agricultural insecticide, mistaking it for salt. The incident occurred on Thursday when the children were playing together, but it came to the fore after they were hospitalised.

The ailing children have been identified as Yuvraj Singh (8), son of Babula Singh; Indurekha Singh (5), daughter of Akshay Singh; and Ghanashyam Singh (4), son of Ramesh Singh.

According to reports, Yuvraj, Indurekha and Ghanashyam were engaged in a mud-kitchen game using coconut shells. While preparing make-believe meals, they mistakenly used Thimet, a toxic insecticide, thinking it was salt. The children mixed the chemical with chopped onions and consumed it, unaware of the danger.

The family members of Yuvraj, Indurekha and Ghanashyam were away in the fields harvesting paddy when the incident occurred. Upon their return, they found the children’s health deteriorating and rushed them to Nilgiri Sub-Divisional Hospital. As Yuvraj’s condition worsened, he was referred to Remuna Medical College and Hospital before being shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Ghanshyam and Indurekha are currently being treated at Remuna Medical College. Their condition is being monitored.

The incident has sparked concern in the local community.
