Bhubaneswar: Ahead of her 100th birthday on December 5, celebrated gynaecologist Dr K Laxmi Bai has made a significant contribution to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, donating Rs 3.4 crore from her lifetime savings. This generous donation aims to support the establishment of a gynaecological oncology programme at the institute, focusing on cancer care for women.
Dr Laxmi Bai expressed her hope that her contribution will not only enhance the institute’s capabilities but also inspire future healers and provide hope to countless women battling cancer.
It is pertinent to mention that Dr Laxmi Bai, a first-batch MBBS student of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, has been residing at Bhava Nagar in Berhampur, after retiring from MKCG Medical College and Hospital. She will announce her donation on her 100th birthday, December 5. Dr Bai is pleased to donate her life savings to healthcare, specifically for establishing a women’s cancer care. Her students, Prof. P. Bharati and Dr Bharati Mishra, are overseeing the initiative.
Born on December 5, 1926, Bai was part of the first MBBS batch at SCB Medical College, Cuttack (1945-1950). She further honed her skills, earning DGO and MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Madras Medical College (1958). Her excellence earned her a prestigious one-year stipend for an MPH at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA.
Bai began her career at Government Hospital, Sundargarh (1950), and retired as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MKCG Medical College, Berhampur (1986). Her remarkable contributions earned her esteemed awards, including Lady Eminence of South Odisha, Bharat Jyoti Award, International Friendship Society Award, and Best Citizen of India Award.
