Rairangpur (Mayurbhanj): In a shocking incident, a group of five armed dacoits attacked a husband and wife and looted cash and valuables worth over ₹1.6 lakh at Badasiajang (Gumudighutu) village under Tiring police station limits in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday night.
According to police sources, the dacoity occurred at the residence of Ashwini Mahanta of Badasiajang Sahi. The assailants allegedly decamped with ₹61,000 in cash, gold jewellery worth more than ₹1 lakh, an ATM card, and brass utensils after brutally assaulting the couple.
As per the complaint lodged by Ashwini Mahanta, the dacoits had climbed over the compound wall and were hiding inside the premises. When Mahanta went to the cowshed at night to feed his cattle, the five miscreants suddenly attacked him with deadly weapons, causing serious injuries. They also assaulted his wife and overpowered her before ransacking the house and fleeing the spot.
The injured Mahanta stated that the dacoits were speaking in both Odia and Hindi during the crime. Considering the proximity of the Tiring area to the Odisha–Jharkhand border, police suspect that the accused may have escaped into neighbouring Jharkhand.
Following the incident, Ashwini Mahanta was initially admitted to Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later shifted to PRM Medical College and Hospital, Baripada, for advanced treatment.
On receiving the FIR, Tiring police registered a case and launched an investigation. A scientific team, along with the Rairangpur SDPO and local police officials, visited the crime scene and are continuing efforts to trace the culprits.
