Bhubaneswar: The Bhitarkanika National Park will conduct a crocodile census from January 8 to 10, 2026, and will be closed to tourists during this period.
According to reports, the crocodile census in Bhitarkanika National Park is timed to coincide with the new moon because the associated tidal and light conditions provide the optimal environment for accurate counting.
Besides, the census is scheduled from January 8, taking advantage of peak winter, exposed mud banks, and the lunar cycle, making it easier to accurately count crocodiles. The park’s mudflats and low tide during this period make it ideal for counting crocodiles.
It is learnt that experts will be trained and divided into teams to conduct the census using motorised boats.
