Deogarh: In a tragic incident stemming from a family dispute, a couple from Jintapali village under Palsama Panchayat in Reamal block of Deogarh district lost their lives after allegedly consuming pesticide in a nearby forest on Saturday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Dushmant Majhi (34) and his wife Rinki Majhi (28).
According to reports, the couple was returning to their village from Jharaberni, the woman’s parental home, when an argument broke out between them for undisclosed reasons.
Following the quarrel, the couple reportedly parked their motorcycle near Dalak Chhak along the roadside and walked into the adjacent forest, where they consumed pesticide in an apparent suicide attempt.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, their young son remained beside his unconscious parents throughout the night. On Sunday morning, the child managed to reach the roadside and stopped passersby, informing them about the incident.
With the assistance of local residents and police, both Dushmant and Rinki were rushed to the Chhendipada Community Health Centre. Doctors declared Dushmant Majhi dead on arrival, while Rinki Majhi was referred to the district headquarters hospital in Angul due to her critical condition.
As her condition deteriorated, Rinki was later shifted to Cuttack for advanced treatment. However, she succumbed to the effects of poisoning on the way.
The Kundheigola police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
