Cold Wave Tightens Grip On Capital As Temperature Matches 1952 Jan 8 Record

Bhubaneswar: The Capital City of  Odisha woke up to a chilly morning, with the temperature dropping to 9.4°C, equalling the lowest temperature recorded on January 8, 1952, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

This marks the fourth lowest temperature recorded in Bhubaneswar during the month of January since 1952, highlighting the unusually cold weather conditions prevailing in the city.

The city’s lowest temperatures in January include 8.6°C on January 5, 1992, and 9°C on January 17, 2003. On January 15, 2012, the temperature was recorded at 9.3°C. Notably, today’s temperature of 9.4°C matches the record set on January 3, 1952.

Meanwhile, the IMD attributed the drop in temperature to the cold winds blowing from the Bay of Bengal depression.

However, no significant change is expected in the weather for the next 2-3 days. Temperatures are likely to rise by 2-3°C in the next 2 days, followed by a gradual increase in cold. The depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression on Friday, but it is unlikely to cause rainfall in Odisha.
