SIR In Bengal: BLO Serves Notice To Wife For ‘Logical Discrepancy’ In Voter Data

Kolkata: After Ketugram in East Burdwan district of West Bengal, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in the state’s Hooghly district, on Thursday, served a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing notice to his wife.

Rajshekhar Majumdar, a resident of Ward No. 1 of Tarakeshwar Municipality, is the BLO for booth number 248 of the Tarakeshwar Assembly constituency in Hooghly district.

On Thursday, a hearing notice has been issued in the name of Rajshekhar’s wife, Susmita Majumdar.

As the BLO, Rajshekhar himself had to deliver the notice.

Susmita’s father, Subrata Chatterjee, was serving in the Indian Army. His name was not present in the 2002 voter list.

Susmita’s grandfather, Bhupendra Chatterjee, was listed in the 2002 voter list.

According to her grandfather’s voter card information, Bhupendra Chatterjee was a voter with serial number 170 in booth number 104 of the 177 Jangipara Assembly constituency.

Due to her father’s name not being present in the voter list, Susmita had her name mapped to her grandfather’s name on the SIR form.

However, Susmita was served a hearing notice, saying that the age difference between her and her grandfather was only 40 years.

However, the 2002 voter list states that Susmita’s grandfather’s age as 81. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 89.

Susmita is currently 37-years-old. According to this calculation, the age difference between the two should be 52 years and not 40 years.

Commenting on this incident, Sushmita’s husband Rajshekhar said, “This mistake is due to a technical error. As a result, ordinary people are suffering harassment. I myself served the hearing notice to my wife, even though everything was correct in her mapping.”

Rajshekhar said, “There is no negligence on the part of the BLOs; ordinary people are suffering due to the negligence of the Election Commission.”

Incidentally, on Wednesday, Debshankar Chatterjee, a primary school teacher currently working as a BLO in Ketugram of East Burdwan district, served a hearing notice to his wife.

A notice has also been issued in his name as well.

BLO Debshankar said that his father’s name is Pulakendra Chatterjee. The spelling of the name was correct in the 2002 voter list. But this time, due to a ‘logical discrepancy’, the spelling of the surname has been shown incorrectly. That is why he received a hearing notice.

On the other hand, Debshankar’s wife’s ancestral home is in Majhergram, under Nakashipara police station in Nadia district. Her father’s name is Anil Chatterjee.

Due to a ‘logical discrepancy’, the age difference between the father and daughter has become 50 years. Therefore, the Election Commission has also issued a notice to BLO Debshankar’s wife.
