Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance on Friday apprehended a medical officer red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹49,000 at Kaniha in Angul district.
The accused, identified as Dr. Sumanta Kumar Patel, Medical Officer of Community Health Centre (CHC), Kaniha, was caught inside the CHC campus while taking the bribe in lieu of granting incentives to Community Health Officers (CHOs), vigilance sources said.
The entire tainted bribe amount was recovered from Dr. Patel’s possession and subsequently seized by the vigilance team.
Following the successful trap, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to Dr. Patel to ascertain the possession of disproportionate assets (DA), officials said.
In this connection, Cuttack Vigilance Police Station Case No. 02 dated January 15, 2026, has been registered against the accused under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.
Further investigation in the case is currently underway.
