Malkangiri: The Waterfowl Census-2026 was conducted in Malkangiri Forest Division on January 18, 2026. The census was carried out by 24 teams across nine locations in Malkangiri District, involving active participation of school and college students to create awareness about the various migratory birds visiting the district during this season.
According to reports, more than 60 species of birds were recorded during the census, including migratory species such as Tufted Duck, Northern Pintail, and Red-crested Pochard. The census was conducted at various locations, including Satiguda, Chitrakonda, Balimela, Sileru, Saberi, Sapthadhara, Pangam, and Tamasa rivers and waterfalls.
The Malkangiri Forest Division officials, including DFO Sai Kiran DN and Assistant Conservator of Forests Munusun Khemundu and officers from Malkangiri, Kalimela, Balimela, Motu, Chitrakonda, Mathili range participated in the census.
Ramesh Chandra Rout, the Range Officer of Malkangiri, informed that a total of 3,203 birds of various species were counted at Satiguda water reservoir under the Malkangiri range alone.
