Barbil (Keonjhar): A daring armed robbery took place at the Bank of Maharashtra branch on Kalinga Road in Barbil town of Keonjhar district on Monday, triggering panic in the mining hub.
According to reports, five to six unidentified miscreants entered the bank during business hours under the pretext of seeking customer service. They suddenly pulled out firearms, threatened bank staff and customers, and took control of the premises.
The robbers are suspected to have looted around ₹8 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth over ₹5 crore kept inside the bank before fleeing the scene.
Barbil police rushed to the spot after being alerted and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the bank and surrounding areas is being examined, while police have set up blockades at various locations across the district to track down the culprits.
A case has been registered, though the exact amount of cash and gold looted is yet to be officially confirmed. Further investigation is underway.
The incident has raised serious concerns over security at financial institutions in the town.
