New Land Management Act To Replace Decades-Old Laws In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is set to introduce a new legislation—the Odisha Government Land Management Act—aimed at simplifying land administration and resolving long-pending land-related issues across the state.

Announcing this on Monday, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari said a Bill in this regard would be tabled during the upcoming session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

The proposed law will replace two existing Acts—the Odisha Prevention of Land Encroachment Act and the Odisha Government Settlement Act—both of which were enacted in the 1980s and are now considered outdated.

“We are currently consulting experts, Revenue Department officials, district Collectors, the Revenue Commissioner, the Law Department Secretary and senior lawyers to prepare a comprehensive draft,” Pujari said. He added that opinions of common citizens, retired officials and experienced legal professionals would also be sought before the final proposal is sent to the Law Department.

After receiving clearance from the Law Department, the draft proposal will be placed before the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Once approved by the Cabinet, the Bill will be formally introduced in the Assembly.

According to the Revenue Minister, the new legislation aims to remove legal ambiguities, streamline land settlement procedures and accelerate the resolution of disputes. “The Act will make land administration more transparent, efficient and people-friendly, while addressing long-pending land issues across Odisha,” he said.
