Sunjay Kapur Case: Priya Kapur Files Defamation Case Against Sister-In-Law

New Delhi: Priya Kapur, wife of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has initiated a criminal defamation complaint against her sister-in-law, Mandhira Kapur Smith, and another, alleging a sustained campaign of false statements and public attacks against her across digital platforms, podcasts, and media interviews.

On Wednesday, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at the Patiala House Courts heard the matter in-camera, with Priya Kapur appearing to record her statement.

The complaint alleges that interviews and content circulated through podcasts, and subsequently republished by sections of the media, are false, misleading and defamatory, and have caused serious harm to her reputation.

According to the complaint, the alleged defamatory content includes personal attacks and allegations presented as facts, despite the issues being sub judice.

Priya Kapur has asserted that the statements amount to criminal defamation and reflect an attempt to malign and harass her through public discourse rather than through lawful judicial processes.

Meanwhile, related legal proceedings involving Priya Kapur are also pending before the Supreme Court.

On January 16, the apex court issued notice to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor on an application filed by Priya Kapur seeking certified copies of records relating to the 2016 divorce proceedings between her and Sunjay Kapur.

During an in-chamber hearing, a single-judge bench of Justice A.S. Chandurkar directed Karisma Kapoor to file her response within two weeks to Priya Kapur’s application.

Priya Kapur has sought certified copies of all documents connected with the divorce case, including the divorce petition, pleadings filed by the parties, orders passed by the Supreme Court, and, in particular, the settlement recorded between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur in 2016.

In her application, Priya Kapur has contended that access to the complete divorce records, especially the settlement terms concerning financial arrangements and custody, is necessary for the effective adjudication of an estate dispute pending before the Delhi High Court.

A single-judge Bench of Justice Jyoti Singh is yet to pronounce its decision on a petition filed by Karisma Kapoor’s children seeking a share in their late father Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate.

Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Kapoor, have alleged that the will dated March 21, 2025, which bequeaths Sunjay Kapur’s entire personal estate to Priya Kapur, is forged and the outcome of a “criminal conspiracy” to exclude them and their grandmother, Rani Kapur, from the inheritance.
