Calcutta High Court

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed Jadavpur University authorities to maintain law and order and ensure security during Saraswati Puja celebrations on the varsity campus.

A division bench of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen said that university authorities must take appropriate measures to maintain law and order, and the police station must provide assistance if necessary.

In a public interest litigation filed regarding the security and safety in Jadavpur University, the state Higher Education Department had previously allocated funds for installing CCTV cameras at the university.

The university authorities informed the court that the installation of CCTV cameras is underway and will be completed soon.

During the hearing, lawyer Kalyan Banerjee, appearing for the state, said that various unpleasant incidents could occur at Jadavpur University during Saraswati Puja on Friday.

He requested the court to instruct the police to provide security. On the other hand, the Jadavpur University authorities said that the state agency will complete the installation of CCTV cameras within four weeks.

It is worth noting that a lawyer named Soham Das filed a public interest litigation in the Calcutta High Court after the death of a university student due to ragging in the Jadavpur University hostel.

Last September, Anamika Mondal, a third-year English Honours student at Jadavpur University, died under mysterious circumstances.

The deceased student’s family alleged that their daughter was murdered. They claimed that someone had pushed her into the water body inside the campus. Therefore, Anamika’s family filed a murder complaint at the Jadavpur police station. The body of a female student was recovered from the university pond.

The Calcutta High Court had previously directed the state Higher Education Department to allocate funds to increase security at the university. The installation of CCTV cameras has already started, and security guards have also been appointed at the university.
