Bhubaneswar: The GST Department’s special squad seized a goods vehicle transporting a large quantity of betel nuts during a surprise check conducted late Friday night in Sambalpur.
Based on credible intelligence inputs, the enforcement team halted the truck close to Bareipali Square as it approached the city limits under the cover of darkness. Upon thorough examination of the vehicle, raiding team recovered approximately 27 tonnes of betel nuts.
The driver was unable to furnish any legitimate paperwork or invoices to support the shipment. Investigators are still examining whether the consignment was destined for a gutkha or chewing tobacco production facility.
As per information from informed sources, the driver has been issued a formal notice demanding proper documentation. Failure to submit acceptable records within the stipulated three-day window will prompt appropriate legal proceedings under relevant GST regulations.
