Bhubaneswar: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Tuesday arrested two persons with ganja at Bhubaneswar Railway Station, officials said.
The accused, both residents of Haryana, were allegedly attempting to transport the contraband from Ganjam district to Haryana by train. The arrests were made during a routine inspection carried out by the RPF with the assistance of a sniffer dog from its K-9 squad.
According to officials, the sniffer dog alerted the RPF personnel to the presence of ganja after detecting suspicious behaviour by the two persons who were waiting at the station.
Acting on the alert, the RPF team intercepted the suspects and conducted a search, during which ganja was recovered from their bags.
“The two persons were sitting at the station and aroused suspicion. Our K-9 squad dog pointed towards them, following which a search was conducted and ganja was recovered,” an RPF official said.
The official added that such inspections are conducted regularly, especially when trains operating on major routes arrive at the station.
The RPF said routine checks with sniffer dogs form part of its ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling of contraband through the railway network.
Further investigation is underway.
