Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has instructed Khandagiri Jatra committees to limit seating capacity to 1,800 spectators per show, ensuring crowd safety and emergency preparedness.
As per the directives of DCP Jagmohan Meena, a minimum three-foot gap between seating rows is mandatory, along with wider internal pathways inside the pandals to allow smooth movement of spectators and quick access for emergency services. All Jatra organising committees have been instructed to comply with these norms strictly, failing which action will be taken. The move aims to prevent stampedes and ensure safety of spectators, especially women, who often face harassment in crowded pandals.
Meanwhile, Jatra committee members express concerns over potential revenue loss due to reduced seating capacity.
It is pertinent to mention that the first phase of Khandagiri Jatra has begun from January 27 and will continue till February 7. Seven pandals will host 15 named opera parties in two phases. In the first phase, seven jatra parties will perform.
