Rayagada: A shocking incident of domestic violence has been reported from Rayagada district, where a man allegedly murdered his wife by attacking her with an axe while she was asleep. The incident took place in the Kumbhikota police station area, sending shockwaves across the region.
According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Raghu Meleka, a resident of Iripiput village under Nakati Panchayat in Rayagada block. He allegedly killed his wife Maltu Meleka (51) following a family dispute late on Wednesday night.
Police said that an argument had erupted between the husband and wife over an unspecified issue. In a fit of rage, Raghu Meleka allegedly picked up an axe and struck his wife multiple times on the neck and head while she was sleeping. Maltu Meleka died on the spot due to the severe injuries.
After the incident came to light, family members informed the police. Acting on the information, Rayagada SDPO Gaurahari Sahu, Rayagada IIC Prasanna Kumar Behera, Kumbhikota Police Station in-charge Giasuddin Khan, along with other police officials, reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
The police seized the body and sent it to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem examination. The axe used in the crime has also been recovered from the scene.
The accused husband has been detained by the police for questioning.
Further investigation is underway.
