Bhubaneswar: The sacred Mahadeep will be lifted atop the Lingaraj temple crown at 10 pm on February 15, marking the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.
The festival, celebrating Shiva and Shakti’s divine union, falls on February 15, with special puja being held across temples. In Odisha, devotees break their fasts only after the Mahadeepa is raised atop the Shiva shrines. In Bhubaneswar, the 11th-century Lingaraj temple draws thousands to witness this sacred moment and break their fast.
As we all know the Maha Shivaratri celebrations at Lingaraj Temple starts early in the morning and go on until the Mahadeepa is raised at night. The lighting up of Mahadeep, or sacred lamp marks a divine moment when devotees break their fast after a night of prayer and reverence. This ritual is more than just lighting a lamp as it signifies the peak of spiritual practices performed by thousands of worshippers during the day.
The temple administration on Friday held a meeting to finalize arrangements, focusing on the smooth execution of rituals and ensuring that all necessary safety and security measures are in place. With the temple expecting a significant gathering of devotees, the administration has prioritized creating a peaceful and devotional atmosphere, making the sacred Mahadeepa lighting a truly unforgettable experience for all. As per the decision taken in the meeting, the Mahadeep will be lifted at 10 pm.
