Koraput: In a major crackdown on illegal narcotics cultivation, authorities destroyed a large cannabis plantation spread over 27 acres of government forest land under the Machkund police station limits in Koraput district on Wednesday.
The raid was carried out on Wednesday, at Lambru village under Bilaput Gram Panchayat. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team comprising personnel from the police, excise, fire services and revenue department conducted the operation.
During the drive, officials identified and destroyed approximately 32,400 cannabis (hemp) plants cultivated illegally on jungle kisam government land. The plantation was reportedly spread across difficult forest terrain.
A case has been registered at Machkund Police Station vide Case No. 22 dated February 11, 2026, under Section 20(a)(i) of the NDPS Act.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with the illegal cultivation, and the accused persons remain unidentified. Police said further investigation is underway to trace those involved in the illicit activity.
Around 30 personnel from different departments participated in the coordinated enforcement operation.
