Chhatrapur: The Ganjam District Administration has launched Senior Citizens’ Week from February 13 to 19, 2026, recognising the lifelong contributions, rich experience, and profound wisdom of the district’s senior citizens. The week-long observance will culminate on February 20, coinciding with World Social Justice Day.
Senior citizens, often described as a living repository of cultural heritage, moral values, and invaluable experience, play a pivotal role in shaping families, strengthening communities, and contributing to nation-building. The initiative aims not only to honour them but also to raise awareness about their rights, dignity, health, and the various government welfare schemes available for their benefit.
The week features a range of events across the district. On February 16, at 11 am, college-level creative literary competitions will be held at Chhatrapur Science College, while high school and primary school competitions will take place at designated venues under the supervision of the District Education Officer, Ganjam. Later that day, at 3 pm, a Poetry Recitation Festival will be organised at the Bhanjanagar Block Conference Hall.
A Seminar and Interface Session is scheduled for February 17 at 3 pm at the Berhampur Municipal Corporation Conference Hall, providing a platform for meaningful discussions on issues concerning senior citizens.
With a focus on health and wellbeing, free health check-up camps will be conducted on February 18, from 8 am to 12 noon, across all Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Sub-Divisional Hospitals, and the District Headquarters Hospital.
The week will also feature recreational and wellness activities. On February 19 at 11 am, senior citizens can participate in sports events at the Chhatrapur Indoor Stadium, followed by a Yoga programme on February 20, from 5:30 am to 7:30 am, at the Chhatrapur Yoga Stadium. Later that day, at 11:00 am, an awareness programme on Digital Literacy, Financial Literacy, and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act will be held at the Rushikulya Conference Hall.
The District Administration has appealed to senior citizens, educational institutions, voluntary organisations, and members of the public to actively participate in the celebrations. Officials emphasised that the initiative seeks to foster a compassionate, respectful, and inclusive society that ensures dignity and wellbeing for all senior citizens.
