Odisha Witnesses 114 Elephants’ Death In Last One And Half Years: Minister

Bhubaneswar: A total of 114 elephants died in Odisha due to various reasons in last one and half hour, informed Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the State Assembly.

In response to a query by MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, the Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia provided the data of elephant deaths between 2024-25 and 2025-26 (up to September).

According to Minister, a total of 114 elephants died in the state due to various reasons. The elephant deaths were attributed to various causes, including poaching (6), electrocution (42), train accidents (4), diseases (29), natural causes (17), retaliatory attacks by humans (3), and other incidents (13) such as falls, drowning, and infighting. Additionally, 93 people have been arrested in connection with unnatural elephant deaths.

The Minister, however, assured the House that the state government is taking steps to address the issue and protect the elephant population.
