Nabarangapur: A shocking incident of casteism has come to light in Kongra village, under Tentulikhunti block of Nabarangapur district, where villagers refused to lend a shoulder to carry the body of a fellow villager to the cremation ground due to his daughters’ inter-caste marriages.
As per reports, Durjan Majhi, a resident of Kongra village under Tentulikhunti block, passed away last night. He had two sons and two daughters. However, due to his daughters’ inter-caste marriages, the villagers refused to lend a shoulder to carry his body.
To add to the sorrow, his elder son also refused to participate in the funeral, citing caste restrictions. Left with no option, Majhi’s younger son Shiva Majhi, his younger daughter Swapna Majhi (who had married outside their caste), the deceased’s sister, and nephew had to carry the body to the cremation ground and perform the last rites.
Although some neighbours attended, none of them lent a hand.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the prevalence of casteism in society. The deceased’s family is now seeking justice and appealing to the district administration to take action against those responsible for this irresponsible act.
