Bhubaneswar: The Deputy Director of Mines, Cuttack Circle, was arrested by Odisha Vigilance on Wednesday, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a businessman. The arrest was made after a trap was laid following a complaint, and the bribe money was recovered from accused officer Debabrata Mohanty’s possession.
During searches, authorities unearthed cash worth Rs 4,27,13,600, gold jewellery weighing 305.40 gms, and silver ornaments weighing 600 gms from Mohanty’s rented flat in Bhubaneswar. A palatial double-storeyed building at Pahala, Bhubaneswar, was also discovered.
Mohanty, who joined the government service in 2004, had held various positions in the Mining Office, including Junior Mining Officer, Assistant Mining Officer, and Deputy Director of Mines. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain his investments, deposits, and insurance details.
