Berhampur: In a tragic road accident in Ganjam district, two employees of a borewell drilling vehicle lost their lives and five others sustained injuries after the vehicle overturned in the Nimakhandi area on Thursday.
The mishap took place near a hatchery at Jhadankuli village when the borewell drilling vehicle was passing through the stretch. According to preliminary reports, the driver attempted to avoid hitting a cyclist who suddenly came in front of the vehicle. In the process, he swerved off the road but reportedly lost control, causing the heavy vehicle to overturn.
The driver was trapped beneath the overturned vehicle and died on the spot. Another worker also succumbed to injuries. The deceased have been identified as Rabi Naik and Shivaji Kanhar.
Five injured persons, including the cyclist, were rescued from the accident site by locals and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment. Their condition is being monitored.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
