Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s 86 operational jails are currently housing 18,176 inmates, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the state assembly on Monday.
Replying to a written question by BJD leader and Baliguda MLA Chakramani Kanhar, CM Majhi said that as of January 31, 2026, the total prison capacity across the state stands at 24,189. Of the inmates, 4,136 are convicts serving their sentences, while 14,040 are undertrial prisoners awaiting trial.
The figures highlight the persistent issue of overcrowding in the state’s prisons, with occupancy levels nearing 75% of total capacity.
