Phulbani: In a shocking incident in Kandhamal district, a man allegedly went on a shooting spree, killing his wife and seriously injuring another person. The accused has been detained and police have launched an investigation to ascertain the motive behind the violent act.
The accused has been identified as Biranchi Behera, a resident of Sarupada village under Krandibali panchayat.
According to reports, Biranchi allegedly opened fire on Narottam Behera of Katapanga village when the latter was on his way to Phiringia along with his wife to get an Aadhaar card made.
The incident reportedly occurred near the Bagharimunda kendu leaf collection point under Gochhapada police station, where the accused intercepted the couple and opened fire at Narottam. The bullet struck Narottam in the leg and body, leaving him seriously injured.
After the attack, Biranchi allegedly returned to his house and shot his wife, Lilima Behera, killing her on the spot. The exact reason behind the killing of his wife is yet to be known.
On receiving information, police reached the spot and rushed the injured Narottam to
Gochhapada CHC (Community Health Centre) for treatment. After primary care, he was later referred to the Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police also recovered the body of Lilima Behera and seized the firearm allegedly used in the crime. The accused has been detained and is currently being interrogated to determine the exact reason and circumstances that led to the incident.
Gochhapada IIC Sanjit Behera informed that Biranchi is being interrogated in the police station.
According to police sources, there was reportedly a dispute between Biranchi and Narottam over money, which may have triggered the attack. However, the reason behind the killing of the woman remains unclear.
Police personnel visited the hospital and questioned Narottam regarding the incident, while further interrogation of the accused is underway at the police station. Gochhapada police have continued their investigation into the matter.
