Bhubaneswar: The body of a fisherman, who went missing in Gobari river after being dragged by a crocodile, was found today.
Deba Kumar Mandal was killed in a saltwater crocodile attack in Baulakani village, near Bhitarkanika National Park, on Tuesday afternoon. Deba Kumar Mandal was dragged into the water while fishing and his mutilated body was retrieved today
The victim’s family will receive Rs 10 lakh compensation under the ex gratia scheme, said DFO Varadaraj Gaonkar. The incident occurred outside the national park, but the family is eligible for the payment after post-mortem examination.
Human-crocodile conflict in areas close to the national park has resulted in the loss of four human lives in the last 12 months.
The national park is home to 1,858 saltwater crocodiles in its water bodies and river system. No crocodile death has been reported in the last one year.
