Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was thrown into chaos on Tuesday as BJD and Congress MLAs protested the deadly fire at Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital, which claimed more than 10 lives and injured 20 others. The blaze, believed to have been caused by a short circuit in the first-floor Trauma ICU, occurred while patients were asleep.
The commotion began around 10:30 am, shortly after the House convened for Question Hour. Opposition MLAs stormed the Well, raising slogans such as “Mohan Majhi Hai Hai” and demanding the resignation of Health & Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling. Several lawmakers also displayed placards highlighting the hospital tragedy.
Speaker Surama Padhy repeatedly urged the members to return to their seats and allow the Question Hour to continue, but the protests showed no sign of abating. Citing the disruption, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with opposition members blaming the government for lapses in hospital safety and calling for strict accountability.
