Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has installed rooftop solar power systems on 56,793 buildings across the state under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo informed the Assembly on Wednesday.

Responding to a written query by BJD MLA from Nayagarh Arun Sahoo, Singh Deo said the state has received 2,01,443 applications under the scheme so far. Out of these, rooftop solar installations have been completed for 46,793 beneficiaries.

The Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the energy portfolio, stated that subsidies have already been disbursed to 35,966 beneficiaries under the programme.

In addition, the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency has installed rooftop solar systems on 28 government office buildings in Bhubaneswar, with a combined capacity of 1,850 kilowatts.

Providing details of financial assistance, Singh Deo said the central government offers a subsidy of ₹78,000 for rooftop solar installations of up to 3 kilowatts, while the state government contributes an additional ₹60,000.

Officials further informed that the Odisha government has earmarked ₹1,800 crore for the implementation of the scheme over a three-year period from 2024–25 to 2026–27.

The initiative is aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy in the state while reducing household electricity costs and dependence on conventional power sources.
