Bhubaneswar: A major accident was narrowly averted on Sunday morning when a bauxite-laden tanker lost control and crashed into three roadside houses near the Muniguda Kanak Devarami Temple in Rayagada district.
The tanker, carrying bauxite from Visakhapatnam to Jharsuguda, reportedly lost balance — possibly due to a sudden loss of control or road conditions — and veered off the road. It rammed directly into the structures, destroying walls, asbestos roofing, and furniture in the affected homes.
Three families residing in the houses suffered minor injuries in the incident. Fortunately, no serious casualties were reported, and residents described it as a close shave with disaster. Local residents rushed to the scene as the massive vehicle came to a halt amid the debris.
The Muniguda police were promptly informed and reached the spot to secure the area. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident, including whether factors such as over-speeding, mechanical failure, or driver error contributed to the mishap. They are also assessing the extent of property damage and the condition of those injured.
Police have initiated a detailed probe, and further updates are awaited as the situation develops.
