Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been honoured with the Global Sustainability & Innovation Award 2026 for its excellence in climate-resilient renewable water infrastructure and innovative sludge treatment and resource recovery initiatives.

The award was presented at a special gathering held at Shamvet Auditorium in New Delhi on Tuesday evening, organised by the Earth Water Foundation. BMC Mayor Sulochana Das, along with her team, received the award from Durga Shankar Mishra, former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh and former Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The BMC delegation included Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kanhar, Sanitation Standing Committee Chairman Biranchi Narayan Mahasupakar, Deputy Commissioner N. Ganesh Babu, and officials Lokanatha Bej and Brahmananda Tarai of OREDA.

The recognition highlights BMC’s progressive approach to sustainable infrastructure and efficient wastewater management. The civic body has implemented climate-friendly renewable water systems, including 30 solar-powered water kiosks across the city.

In Basuaghai, BMC has operationalised advanced faecal sludge treatment practices, where human waste is scientifically processed using modern technology. The treated water is reused, while the processed sludge is converted into fertiliser, preventing contamination of water bodies and air.

Officials said the corporation has also prioritised occupational safety, particularly for third-gender workers engaged in sanitation and processing activities.

Mayor Das and BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana dedicated the award to the citizens of Bhubaneswar, stating that the recognition reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development and innovation in public service delivery.
