Cuttack: A Range-level workshop on the critical themes of Women Empowerment and Human Trafficking was inaugurated by the Inspector General of Police, Central Range, Dr Satyajit Naik,IPS, in the presence of the Superintendent of Police, Cuttack. Senior officers, field functionaries, and stakeholders participated in the deliberations.
Addressing the gathering, it was emphasized that women empowerment and human trafficking are deeply interconnected issues of immense social importance. Women form the backbone of families and the nation, contributing significantly to social and economic development. However, challenges such as inequality, lack of education, violence, and exploitation continue to persist.
Human trafficking remains one of the gravest concerns. It involves the use of force, fraud, or deception to exploit individuals—particularly women and children—for forced labour, illegal activities, or sexual exploitation. This heinous crime constitutes a serious violation of human dignity and fundamental human rights. Key reasons include poverty, unemployment, lack of awareness, and misplaced trust in fraudulent agents.
The workshop highlighted the legal framework in place to combat trafficking, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA), and the POCSO Act. The Odisha Police continues to take proactive measures such as: Strengthening Anti Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs), Promoting use of emergency helpline 112, Operationalizing Child Helpline 1098, Conducting sustained awareness programmes across rural and urban areas.
It was underscored that enforcement alone is not sufficient. Community participation is vital. Women empowerment—through education, awareness, and financial independence—is the most effective deterrent to trafficking. Empowered women are better equipped to protect themselves and their families, and to resist exploitation.
Citizens were urged to support education and aspirations of girls, promote respect and safety for women, remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, actively spread awareness in communities.
