Tiger Or Leopard? Forest Officials Probe Fresh Kill In Subdega Block

Sundargarh: Fresh concerns have emerged in western Odisha after suspected big cat movement was reported once again in the forested areas of Sundargarh district.

A few months ago, a tiger was sighted in the Sundargarh Forest Division, where it had killed and partially consumed a calf in the Sadar forest range before reportedly moving towards Bamra and Bonai forest regions.

On Saturday, similar fears resurfaced following reports of a possible big cat presence near Yugiyugene hill, located close to Biratula village under Subdega block. Although no direct sighting has been confirmed, locals reported that a cow was found dead at the base of the hill, with signs suggesting it had been attacked and eaten by a wild animal.

Villagers who descended the hill on Saturday afternoon discovered the carcass along with pug marks believed to be that of a large carnivore. They immediately alerted the forest department.

A team from the forest department subsequently reached the spot and initiated an on-ground assessment. As part of the surveillance efforts, three tracking cameras have been installed in the area to ascertain the presence and movement of the animal.

Subdega Forest Ranger Anjana Gardia stated that while the presence of pug marks and the killing of the cow indicate a possible big cat attack, it is yet to be confirmed whether the animal involved is the same tiger spotted earlier or another predator, such as a leopard.

Due to fading daylight, the search operation was suspended on Saturday evening. Forest officials are expected to resume combing operations in the area on Sunday morning to gather further evidence and track the animal.

Authorities have urged local residents to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into forested or hilly areas until clarity emerges on the animal’s identity and movement.
