Rourkela: A woman Maoist surrendered to the Rourkela police on Monday, officials said, marking another success in ongoing efforts to bring insurgents into the mainstream.

The surrendered cadre has been identified as Mongdi Honhaga (19), a member of the Local Guerrilla Squad (LGSM). She hails from Holonguli village under the jurisdiction of Chotanagra police station in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district.

According to the police, Hunanga joined the Maoist outfit after being influenced by its ideology and had been active in the region for the past two years. During this period, she was allegedly involved in several violent incidents, including the Banko stone quarry theft and a railway IED explosion.

DIG (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai said that her surrender reflects the impact of sustained police action and rehabilitation measures.

Under the Odisha government’s revised Naxal surrender and rehabilitation policy, Hunanga will be eligible for financial assistance of Rs 2.65 lakh, along with other benefits aimed at helping her reintegrate into society, the DIG added.

Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani appealed to other Maoist cadres to shun violence and join the mainstream, stating that the administration is committed to ensuring their rehabilitation.
