Baripada: A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in an open field and rescued by villagers in Sanamauda village under Gorumahisani police station in Mayurbhanj district on Friday.
According to reports, some local children who were playing cricket near a field heard the crying of an infant. They immediately informed the villagers, who rushed to the spot and discovered the newborn baby girl. The villagers brought the infant to the village and promptly informed the police and called an ambulance. The baby was initially shifted to Gorumahisani Community Health Centre. The baby girl was later transferred to Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for better treatment as her condition worsened. Doctors suspect the infant was born two days ago.
Police suspect that the child may have been abandoned due to fear of social stigma arising from an illicit relationship. No clear information has yet emerged about who abandoned the baby or the exact circumstances.
